DigitalOcean Review — Is It Worth It?

DigitalOcean is one of the best developer VPS platforms — fast NVMe SSD storage, global datacentres, hourly billing, and the best developer documentation in the industry. Important caveat: DO's shared IP ranges have a well-known abuse reputation. Spam filters frequently block DO IP addresses, so you should never send transactional email directly from a Droplet. Use Mailgun, SendGrid, or Postmark instead.

⚠️ DigitalOcean's shared IP addresses are heavily abused by spammers and malicious actors. This means DO IP ranges are frequently blocklisted by spam filters. Never send transactional or marketing email directly from a Droplet — always use a dedicated email delivery service like Mailgun, SendGrid, Postmark, or Amazon SES.

Pros

  • Excellent value — fast NVMe SSD for $4/mo
  • No renewal shock — consistent monthly pricing
  • Best developer documentation of any VPS provider
  • Global datacentres including EU (Amsterdam, Frankfurt)
  • Hourly billing — scale up and down freely
  • Kubernetes, managed databases, app platform all available
  • Large community and tutorial library

Watch out for

  • IP reputation issues — DO ranges frequently flagged by spam filters
  • No managed service — you handle OS updates and security yourself
  • Support is slower than managed hosts (ticket-based for basic plans)
  • Not beginner-friendly — requires Linux/server knowledge
  • No cPanel or traditional hosting interface

✅ Best for

Developers, DevOps engineers, and technical users who need full server control, affordable cloud infrastructure, and are comfortable managing Linux servers.

❌ Avoid if

You're not comfortable with Linux server administration, you need email hosting included, or you need managed WordPress without server management overhead (use Cloudways instead).

What you actually get

IP reputation

DigitalOcean's shared IP ranges are frequently flagged by spam/threat intelligence tools due to heavy abuse by malicious actors. This doesn't affect your site's web traffic but will cause email deliverability issues if you try to send mail directly. Always use a dedicated email service.

Performance

NVMe SSD storage across all Droplet sizes. Fast network with low latency to major internet exchanges. Consistently good performance for web applications and APIs.

Datacentres

Datacentres in New York, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Singapore, Toronto, Bangalore, London, and Sydney. EU users should choose Amsterdam or Frankfurt.

Developer tools

Excellent API, Terraform provider, GitHub Actions integration, Kubernetes service (DOKS), managed PostgreSQL/MySQL/Redis, managed load balancers, Spaces (S3-compatible object storage).

Documentation

The best developer docs and tutorials of any cloud/VPS provider. The DigitalOcean Community has thousands of step-by-step tutorials covering almost every server setup scenario.

Support

Community forums and docs are excellent. Ticket support on all plans. Phone and premium support available on higher spend tiers. Less hand-holding than managed hosting providers.

Frequently asked about DigitalOcean

Is DigitalOcean safe to use in 2025?
Yes — DigitalOcean is a legitimate, publicly-traded company (NYSE: DOCN) and a reliable infrastructure provider. The IP reputation issue refers to abuse by bad actors on the same shared IP ranges, not to DigitalOcean itself. Your website hosted on DO is perfectly safe.
Why is DigitalOcean's IP reputation bad?
DigitalOcean's cheap, easy-to-provision VPS infrastructure makes it attractive to spammers, botnet operators, and phishing actors who spin up and tear down servers quickly. This leads to many DO IP ranges being blocklisted by spam filters. This affects email sending, not web traffic.
Can I send email from DigitalOcean?
You can technically configure a mail server on a Droplet, but DO's IP reputation means your emails will likely end up in spam or be rejected outright. Always use a dedicated email delivery service: Mailgun, SendGrid, Postmark, or Amazon SES. These route through clean, pre-warmed IP addresses.
DigitalOcean vs Vultr vs Hetzner — which is best?
Hetzner gives the best specs per dollar (EU only). Vultr has the most global locations at competitive prices. DigitalOcean has the best documentation, developer ecosystem, and managed services. For pure VPS value in the EU, Hetzner wins. For global coverage and developer tools, DigitalOcean wins.
Is DigitalOcean good for WordPress?
DigitalOcean can host WordPress, but you'll need to manage the server yourself (install LEMP stack, configure WordPress, handle updates and security). For managed WordPress on DO infrastructure without the admin overhead, use Cloudways — which runs on DigitalOcean but manages the server for you.
